Spanning over 11 miles, Port Orchard is one of the most beautiful places to live, with constant views of the mountains and the Puget Sound, which makes this a great place for nature exploration and families. Elementary schools in the South Kitsap School District includes East Port Orchard, South Colby, and Orchard Heights Elementary. Middle Schools include Cedar Heights, Marcus Whitman, and John Sedgwick. High Schools include South Kitsap, Explorer & Hope Academy, and the Discovery Alternative School, amongst others.

Our town petitioned the Washington State Legislature of 1892-1893 to change its name to “Port Orchard”, named after Port Orchard Bay and Vancouver's clerk, Orchard.
